My kids are night owls. We often travel at night on weekends, so their sleep times weren’t very consistent when they were younger. - Rough play that gets them excited

Follow a Simple, Predictable Sequence
Kids respond well to a “same steps, same order” approach. For example:
Bath → Pajamas → Brush Teeth → Story Time → Bedtime Chat → Lights Out
Add a Comfort Cue
A special object or habit signals “time to sleep” to your child’s brain. This could be:
- A favorite bedtime story
- A soft blanket or stuffed animal
- A goodnight song or prayer
Encourage Relaxation Before Sleep
You can help your child’s body and mind slow down with:
- Gentle stretches
- Deep breathing (“smell the flowers, blow the candles”)
- Quiet music or white noise

Make the Bedroom Sleep-Friendly
The bedroom environment should feel safe, quiet, and cozy.
- Keep it cool (around 20–22°C)
- Use blackout curtains if light is an issue
- Keep toys out of sight to avoid distractions
Include a “Connection Moment”
Bedtime can be the perfect time for a quick check-in:
- Ask about their favorite part of the day
- Listen to their worries or funny stories
- Share something you’re grateful for
These moments strengthen your bond and make bedtime something they look forward to.
Sample Bedtime Routine for a 6-Year-Old
7:45 PM: Bath & pajamas
8:00 PM: Brush teeth & toilet
8:10 PM: Read 2–3 short stories together
8:25 PM: Goodnight chat and cuddle
8:30 PM: Lights out & soothing background noise
Consistency is key. Even if your child protests at first, sticking to the same routine night after night will help them adjust. Within a week or two, you’ll notice bedtime becoming calmer and quicker.
