Real-Life “What Would You Do?” Questions for Ages 6–10

Sometimes the best conversations with kids begin with a simple question.

Not:

“How was school?”

But:

“What would you do if you studied for the wrong exam?”

Or:

“What would you do if your best friend acted like they forgot you after vacation?”

Kids often open up more when conversations feel playful, imaginative, or story-based instead of direct. Scenario questions help children think through emotions, social situations, awkward moments, friendships, confidence, honesty, and safety — all without sounding like a lecture.

These “what would you do?” prompts are perfect for:

  • dinner table conversations
  • bedtime chats
  • classroom discussions
  • car rides
  • counseling sessions
  • family bonding moments
  • morning meetings
  • social-emotional learning activities

Some questions are funny. Some are thoughtful. Some are awkward in a very relatable kid way. And sometimes children’s answers are surprisingly wise.

The goal is not to find the “perfect” answer. The goal is simply to talk, think, laugh, and connect.

Why Scenario Questions Are So Helpful for Kids

Scenario-based questions may seem simple, but they can help children practice many important life skills.

They encourage kids to:

  • think before reacting
  • understand emotions
  • imagine consequences
  • build empathy
  • solve problems
  • communicate clearly
  • talk openly with adults
  • become more confident

They also help parents learn more about how their children think.

Sometimes children answer honestly in surprising ways when they don’t feel pressured. A simple imaginary question can reveal:

  • worries
  • fears
  • social struggles
  • confidence issues
  • friendship concerns
  • emotional maturity
  • humor and creativity

And often, the best conversations happen naturally after the question is over.

A child may suddenly say:

“That actually happened to me once.”

Or:

“I think my friend felt like that.”

That’s where meaningful conversations begin.

Tips for Using These Conversation Starters

You do not need to ask all the questions at once.

In fact, one or two questions at a time usually work best.

You can:

  • ask them during dinner
  • use them in the car
  • turn them into printable cards
  • use them for classroom discussion
  • pick one question before bedtime
  • let siblings answer together
  • ask children to explain why they chose an answer

You may even be surprised by how differently children answer the same scenario.

There are no perfect answers.

The purpose is connection, conversation, creativity, and emotional growth.

And honestly, sometimes the answers are just hilarious.
